Where did history happen?
Too many children have the idea that history happened somewhere else. It's too easy to give the impression that the Romans lived in Bath and on Hadrian's Wall and not around West Yorkshire. Yet there were Roman Towns at Adel and Castleford and possibly a Roman settlement in Leeds itself. A year 5 student could be forgiven for believing that the Tudors happened in Hampton Court. Yet Halifax was a Tudor boom town. What the student needs is local colour to make history relevant to them.

History happened in West Yorkshire
Much of the information which teachers need to bring that important element of local colour into their lessons can be found on the WYAAS website. It is important because it helps children achieve a sense of place and a feeling of belonging. Their locality is somewhere special: somewhere with a history.

WYAAS appreciates that teachers are busy people with little time to spare tracking things down.
