WEST YORKSHIRE ARCHAEOLOGY ADVISORY SERVICE
HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT RECORD

The West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service (WYAAS) holds and maintains the Historic Enviromental Record (HER). This comprises:

  • Information on all known archaeological sites and find-spots in West Yorkshire, including battlefields, historic parks and gardens and some conservation areas.
  • Information on historic buildings, including those of industrial archaeological interest.
  • The principal oblique aerial photographic collection of archaeological sites in West Yorkshire.
  • Several hundred copies of historic maps.
  • A collection of over 25,000 colour transparencies.
  • A comprehensive reference library on archaeological material.

Please note that we only hold material on West Yorkshire (not the old West Riding and we do not hold genealogical material).

Location

The HER is held in the offices of the WYAAS at the Registry of Deeds, Newstead Road, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF1 2DE.

To view a location map showing how to find us, click Contact Us on the Menu Bar.

Opening Hours

Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
We are closed on Bank Holidays and a limited number of others days in the year.

Appointments

All visits require a prior appointment. To make an appointment please telephone 01924 306797 during opening hours.

Postal Enquiries

The HER can provide limited material through the post. However, we would Bly advise all researchers, academic or commercial, to visit the HER. The records are only partially computerised and we hold a large amount of additional material as hard copy. We also have to abide by copyright laws.

Charges

Access to members of the public and academic researchers is free of charge. We do however have to make a small charge for photocopying.

Access to commercial users of the HER is subject to a charge for the provision of information, although all advice is free. Please enquire as to the current rates when booking an appointment.

If material is requested to be sent by post or email, please note that there will be charges for handling, postage and packing (if relevant) plus, for commercial users, charges for officer time to service the enquiry.

Disabled Access

The HER is based on the first floor of a building which is only accessible by climbing steps (there is no lift). The intention in the medium term is to move to a new building with full disabled access. In the meantime we will make every reasonable effort to make materials in the HER available to disabled visitors in the building. The ground floor of the building is occupied by the West Yorkshire Archive Service and we can provide access to our reference material in their search room. Please inform our staff when making an appointment if you require the use of this facility.
