Ackton: Cropmarks of Iron Age/Romano-British farm

This aerial photograph shows the cropmark outline of an Iron Age/Romano-British farm at Ackton near Pontefract. Plants growing over buried ditches can still get water when other plants in the field dry out, in consequence they still remain green while the other plants turn yellow. Archaeologists use these differences in colour to trace the layout of buried features from the air.
