Castleford: Victorian map showing defences of later Roman town

This map was produced in the 19th century. Just below and to the left of the church there is a curved boundary wall. This is very reminiscent of the corner of a Roman fort which often has a distinctive playing card shape. Here, it probably indicates the corner of the defences of the late Roman town. This is why the map-maker has written Legeolium, one of the Roman names for Castleford, in this area.
