ASK THE ARCHAEOLOGIST:

The answers to the most frequently asked questions about archaeology

Dave Weldrake
Education ad Outreach Coordinator

Introduction

Everyone would like an expert in the classroom. It makes it so much easier to give an in-depth view of a subject. Sadly this is not always possible. Sometimes you just have to present the information yourself. Maybe you could get some one to role play an archaeologist or, like a student I saw recently, you could explain how archaeology works by using a puppet archaeologist. So to help you bluff your way through, here are some questions which children frequently ask about archaeology together with some tips on how to answer them. I've also given some suggestions for activities which will help you get the message over.

The questions I'm going to try to answer for you are;

How do you know where to dig?

How deep do you have to dig?

How do you know how old an object is?

What sort of tools do you use?

What sort of clothes do you wear?

Have you ever found any dead bodies?

Have you ever found any buried treasure?

What do you need to study to be an archaeologist?

Of course there are a lot more questions, I've been asked, but these are the ones that turn up most often. It should be enough to get you by. If not drop an email to dweldrake@wyjs.org.uk and I'll see if I can answer it for you.
