ARCHAEOLOGY AND EARLY YEARS
Introduction Dave Weldrake Archaeology and Early Years is the result of an exciting joint venture between the West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service (WYAAS) and Trinity and All Saints College (TASC) in Leeds. Both organizations have long been aware of the role that archaeology can play in developing an appreciation of the past in young people. Nationally much effort in recent years has gone into developing archaeological resources for KS2 for the study of, for example, the Romans or the Vikings. However, both TASC and WYAAS believe that archaeology also has a valuable role to play at both Foundation Stage and KS1. This belief led us to develop Archaeology and Early Years - the first archaeological resource especially designed for use at Foundation Stage and KS1. Introducing Archaeology at Foundation Stage and KS1 offers a simple activity which will help your class start thinking about the past. There are also some handy tips about using toys and role play to develop your pupils' thoughts. Sand tray excavations give you a detailed outline of how to use your classroom sand tray to simulate an archaeological dig. This is not just for those who wish to introduce a history topic. It is also a stimulating exercise for those teachers wishing to work on such topics as materials, textures or even Noah's Ark. Further details of the collaboration and who was involved can be found in the History of the project and acknowledgements For more about WYAAS Education Services click here. |
